Product details for Synology RackStation RS4017xs+ 16bay NAS

If you're in need of a secure and efficient way to store your data, then Synology's RS4017XS+ rackmount NAS is a great choice. Unlike the usual external hard drives, you can simultaneously connect all computers in your network to this NAS (network-attached storage) device. It offers you over enough storage space and requires far less power than regular PCs. It has an Intel Xeon D-1541 2.1 GHz processor. It has four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 8 GB of RAM. You can incorporate the following data storage arrays in this rackmount NAS system: 0, 10, 6, 5, 1 and JBOD. When using JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") you can combine several hard drives, regardless of their storage capacity, and retain all of the storage space. This is not the case with RAID levels.

RAID 0 stores your data on multiple drives, which increases performance and speed as all work is split among the various drives rather than handled by just one. The drives should ideally have equal storage capacities and a minimum of two drives are required. This RAID level offers no fault tolerance and is therefore best suited for large volumes of high speed storage. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. RAID 5 stores your data on multiple drives, which gives you high data security. If a drive begins to fail, the data it holds will be recreated and distributed to the other drives allowing users to continue working uninterrupted. For larger NAS systems with more than three hard drives RAID 5 is the ideal choice to retain optimal data security and total drive storage capacity. When using RAID 6 you get higher data security, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still function.
