Product details for Synology DiskStation DS419slim 4-bay NAS

The DS419SLIM desktop NAS from Synology safely stores your data and files. This DS419SLIM NAS (network-attached storage) device, unlike traditional external hard drives, can be directly integrated to your network. It also requires significantly less electricity than regular PCs and offers you over enough space for all your data. It comes with It has a Marvell ARMADA 385 2-core 1.33 GHz processor. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 512 MB of RAM. The following data storage arrays are available for this desktop NAS system: 0, 1, 10, 5, 6 and JBOD. Using a JBOD architecture to create a multi-disk storage space means you can combine hard drives of random sizes and will not lose the storage capacity of any of them. This is not the case with RAID levels.

RAID 0 stores your data on multiple drives, which increases performance and speed as all work is split among the various drives rather than handled by just one. The drives should ideally have equal storage capacities and a minimum of two drives are required. This RAID level offers no fault tolerance and is therefore best suited for large volumes of high speed storage. Using RAID 1 means you get high data security. This is achieved by mirroring, which simply means that your data is duplicated from one drive to another, so that if one fails, nothing is lost. This also means that the total storage capacity of your drives will be halved. RAID 1 is best suited for smaller NAS systems. When using RAID 5 your data is split among multiple drives and when one drive has an error the data is then copied and distributed to the other drives. This method offers you high data security and you can retain the total storage capacity of all your drives. It's the optimal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three hard drives. RAID 6 offers you high data security and is still operational even if two hard drives in the system fail.
