Product details for Synology RackStation RS819 4-bay NAS

With the RS819 rackmount NAS from Synology you can safely store your files and data. Different from traditional external hard drives, the NAS (network-attached storage) device can be integrated directly into your network. This gives all computers connected to your network access to the device and data. It offers you ample storage space and requires significantly less electricity than regular PCs. It has a Realtek RTD1296 1.40 GHz processor. It has With this model's 2 GB of RAM several users can access its data at the same time. The following data storage forms are available for this rackmount NAS system: 0, JBOD, 10, 6, 5 and 1. Using a JBOD architecture to create a multi-disk storage space means you can combine hard drives of random sizes and will not lose the storage capacity of any of them. This is not the case with RAID levels.

Using RAID 0 means your hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work parallely. This increases performance and speed as the work is split bewteen multiple drives, but there is no fault tolerance. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. Using RAID 5 means your data is split among multiple hard drives — when one drive has an error the data is copied and distributed to the other drives. With this method you can retain the storage capacity of all your drives. It's the ideal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three drives. RAID 6 offers you high data security and is still operational even if two hard drives in the system fail.

The RS819 delivers sequential data throughput of over 225 MB/s
(read) and 169 MB/s (write)
With outstanding encrypted data transfer rates -224 MB/s read and 152 MB/s write - the RS819 is an efficient shared memory for many users that protects valuable data.
